Spotlight on cellulose fibre innovators

14/01/2025
Nova Institut has released the names of the six cellulose fibre innovators it has chosen for its yearly award. The organisation based in Hürth, Germany, seeks to assist the chemicals, plastics and materials industries to shift towards more renewable resources made from biomass, recycling or carbon capture.

This year’s nominees include Sci-Lume Labs, a company based in Oklahoma, that is developing a biobased nylon fibre, Bylon, made from agricultural waste. Nova-institut has also singled out SA-Dynamics, which is working on cellulose-based aerogel textiles, and has a functional demonstrator operating thanks to funding from Biotexfuture and RWTH Innovation. Uluu, an Australian company, is seeking to offer a seaweed-derived alternative to PHA polymers for plastics and textiles. The other two nominees are developing biobased packaging alternatives, with a hemp cellulose-based material, made by German start-up Fibres365, and a paper alternative made from fallen leaves, a project spearheaded by French firm Releaf.

The award winners will be announced at the institute’s annual conference, held in Cologne on March 12 & 13, 2025.
