Divers begin fishing net recovery for ambitious recycling project

The Healthy Seas project has recovered more than 20 tonnes of fishing nets from the coasts of Holland and Belgium, which are to be transported to Slovenia and regenerated into Econyl yarns.

The missions have involved scuba divers, photographers and marine archaeologists, due to the presence of naval wrecks in the waters and the nets will be transported to Slovenia by Norwegian company Nofir, a new associate partner of Healthy Seas.

Norsk Fiskeriretur, a Norwegian recycling firm used by the fishing industry, and?Fonda Fish farm, a Slovenian fish breeding company, have joined the three founding partners, Aquafil, ECNC Group and Star Sock.

The polymer yarns in the fishing nets will be processed by Aquafil, which will transform these into Econyl yarns, recycled hollow polyamide, which will then be used by Star Sock to create sport, outdoor and workwear socks.
