Spider silk on track for “large-scale” production

21/03/2014
Michigan-based biotechnology company Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has announced that it intends to “ramp up” production of spider silk fibres.

Kraig makes a genetically engineered spider silk fibre called Monster Silk. It first ran a pilot production programme, which finished in late 2013. It said in a new announcement in March 2014 that it wanted now to move to “commercial-scale” production of the fibre.

“This important programme is working and warrants that we commit additional resources to our scale-up of Monster Silk production,” said founder and chief executive, Kim Thompson.

The company did not give precise figures, but said production of Monster Silk would be in tonnes.
