Two providers of technology for outdoor and sports brands are among the 2014 winners of the Queen’s Award, an annual award that the UK government gives to successful companies.

There are three categories: innovation, international trade and sustainable development.

In the 2014 awards, impact protection material developer D3O was listed among the winners in international trade. The company, whose materials are in use around the world in sports, industrial workwear, law enforcement, footwear, electronics and motorcycle protection in apparel, achieved a 34% increase in sales last year, with revenues reaching £8.5m. In 2013, 88% of D3O’s revenues came from overseas.

One of the winners in the sustainable development category was Nikwax, which makes high-performance, environmentally friendly waterproofing solutions for outdoor footwear, apparel and equipment. It argues that to restore the waterproofing in outdoor gear is in itself a sustainable act because it means equipment will last longer.
