Nike outlines progress in sustainability report

07/05/2014
Nike has cited a 14% reduction in its supplier factories from 910 to 785 over the past two years as one of the highlights of its Sustainable Business Performance Summary.

The report provides an update on performance against its business, labour and environmental goals.
Between 2011 and the end of 2013, it reduced CO2 emissions by 13% and water use at its footwear factories fell by 23%.

It said challenges include the rate at which environmentally preferred materials are available at competitive pricing and the rate at which the market adopts green technologies.

Around 70% of contract factories meet at least the bronze standard set out in Nike’s Sourcing & Manufacturing Sustainability Index, which elevated sustainability, including labour and environmental metrics, to equal to quality, cost and delivery. It aims to only source from factories reaching bronze or better by 2020.

“We recognise that many issues facing business and society are greater than one brand can solve alone. To achieve systemic change we must understand risk and embrace innovation as a way to accelerate positive impacts at scale,” said Hannah Jones, Nike’s chief sustainability officer.
