Timberland publishes second-quarter CSR performance

02/09/2014
Timberland has published the results of its second-quarter 2014 corporate social responsibility review, in which it says it found 34% of its supplier factories passed its audit as ‘accepted’ – marginally lower than the 37% that hit that level in the first quarter.

Its supply chain consisted of 325 active factories (207 finished goods manufacturers and 118 component suppliers such as tanneries, textile mills, and sundries suppliers).

It admitted:  “As the Timberland Supplier Sustainability Team continues to work with factories on their corrective action plans, we expect to see an increase in factories being upgraded from Accepted to be Upgraded ("ATBU") to Accepted.”

Timberland owner VF Corporation conducted 72 audits of Timberland suppliers in the second quarter: 17 were accepted, 52 were rated ATBU and 3 were rejected.

The three rejected factories are working on their corrective action plans with assistance from either the team or their licensee partners, with the intention of re-audit 90 days after their respective audit dates. Production will not begin with these factories until they are re-audited and an improved rating is achieved, it said.

In terms of the group’s Global Social Compliance Programme's (GSCP" environmental framework and Social Accountability International's Social Fingerprint program, 23 Tier 1 footwear and apparel factories (representing 62% of Timberland's global annual footwear and apparel production) met the goal of achieving GSCP Level 2 or higher in all applicable categories - meaning they have a well-established environmental management system in place and have demonstrated progress toward targets to reduce environmental impacts.

Thirty-three Tier 1 footwear and apparel factories (representing 73% of Timberland's global annual footwear and apparel production) met the goal of achieving Level 3 or better on Social Fingerprint - meaning they have a well-established social management system integrated into their operations.

“We anticipate continued improvement in GSCP and Social Fingerprint as the SST continues to work with factories who have not yet achieved Level 2 (GSCP) or 3 (Social Fingerprint),” said the group.
