Two-thirds jump in recycled PET for Timberland in 2013
15/04/2014
In 2013, it used 50 million plastic bottles as recycled PET in its footwear lines – an increase of 64% over 2012.
Around 70% of footwear incorporated recycled, organic or renewable materials.
The company expanded the use of Green Rubber material across its product lines. Green Rubber substitutes virgin rubber with 42% post-industrial recycled latex. During the year, Timberland produced over 13 million pairs of Green Rubber outsoles using four million pounds of recycled rubber, up from nine million pairs and 2.8 million pounds of recycled rubber in 2012.
Ninety-eight percent of footwear leather by volume was sourced from silver or gold-rated tanneries, as rated by the Leather Working Group, an independent group of tanneries and footwear brands that has established a protocol to assess the compliance and environmental performance of tanneries.
CSR projects included a community child care centre in India, financial literacy programmes in India and health awareness programmes in Bangladesh.
It also approached a milestone in terms of volunteering - its one millionth service hour served by employees. Timberland's Path of Service programme was launched in 1992; as of December 31, 2013, its employees had volunteered a cumulative of 992,264 service hours. The brand expects to achieve its one millionth service hour this spring.
