‘Trusted materials’ library aims to promote best practice
Stella McCartney, G-Star RAW, Loomstate, Bionic Yarn and denim manufacturer Saitex have launched a project which aims to help brands and manufacturers “continuously improve”.

Fashion Positive, funded by Schmidt Philanthropies and the DOEN Foundation, says it will enable businesses to look at ‘material health’, material reuse, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness.

The aim is to produce “new materials and optimise manufacturing” to meet the Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold-level standard, beginning in 2016. Certified materials will be added to a Materials Library that will index fabrics, dyes, trims and thread that meet the standard, “making it easier for brands and designers to source trusted, certified materials”.

Tim Coombs, co-founder of Bionic Yarn, which is made from plastic found in the sea, said: "For some time, Bionic has been inspired by Cradle to Cradle's forward-thinking philosophies. We are both honoured and excited to work with the Fashion Positive initiative on the integration of their philosophies into the engineering of our products."

G-Star recently announced the first denim collection made with Bionic Yarn.
