OutDoor braces for gear innovation
Although outdoor gear makes up only a fifth of industry turnover (with apparel taking half and footwear a quarter), the sector is responsible the majority of innovations in the outdoor industry, according to organisers of Germany-based trade show OutDoor Friedrichshafen.

This summer, Japan’s Montbell is exhibiting its UL Dome Shelter, a tent that weighs the same as two cans of drink and can be pitched free-standing.

Marmot’s new Helium sleeping bag has an 800+ down fill and weighs just 935 grams.
Alistaire MacGregor, marketing manager at Original Mountain Marathon (OMM), is enthusiastic about the company’s Half-Sleeping Bag, which attaches to a down jacket.

Martin Wiesmann, director of backpack company Bach, said: “Our product development is based on small improvements and feedback from real-life testing.” He describes this affinity with technology as “slow food”, arguing that it creates opportunities within the industry, “Where large numbers of people eat fast food, there’s also room for slow food.”

Deuter is exhibiting its “new, improved AC Lite series,” Gregory is talking of a “re-launch of its Ventilated Backpacking and Hiking Line” and Lowe Alpine is showing a “completely overhauled collection of hiking backpacks”.

OutDoor 2015 is open from July 15 to 18.
