28/07/2015
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Group has unveiled a Chemical Management System (CMS) Manual that manufacturers can use to align themselves to its goals and which could improve worker safety and reduce environmental impacts.

Available in English and Chinese, the manual “allows an entry point for different roles in the supply chain”.

Cheryl Kreindler, ZDHC manager, said: “A sound chemical management system is not only important for worker safety and to reduce environmental impacts on the community and the broader environment, but it is a cornerstone for ensuring continuous improvement and harmonisation towards the ZDHC Group’s zero discharge goal.”

The framework builds on ISO management standards, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Practical Chemical Management Toolkit and the Outdoor Industry Association Chemicals Management Working Group Framework.

The group was launched in 2012 in response to a Greenpeace report, Chemistry in Any Weather. The goal is to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals across supply chains and product life cycles in the production of apparel, footwear and accessory goods by 2020.The group includes Adidas, Jack Wolfskin, Li Ning, New Balance, Nike and Puma.
