Outdoor Retailer reveals Outdoor Inspiration Awards finalists

Organisers of US-based trade fair Outdoor Retailer have announced the finalists for the Outdoor Inspiration Awards, which recognise individuals or companies “whose efforts go above and beyond in inspiring others to enjoy outdoor activities”.

Sponsored by adidas Outdoor, the event will take place during Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City on January 8.

Finalists include:

• individual: Andy Janicki, John Rathwell and Claire Smallwood
• manufacturer: Combat Flip Flops, KEEN, and LifeStraw
• non-profit: 1% for the Planet, Big City Mountaineers and Veterans Expeditions
• retailer: Alpenglow Sports, River Sports Outfitters and The Summit Hut
• Boy Scouts of America Youth: Tucker Callen, Dana Even and Jackie Timmins

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award honours the late Skip Yowell, founder of JanSport and a passionate outdoorsman. He was a founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association and worked with the Big City Mountaineers, a wilderness mentorship program.

“Working with Outdoor Retailer, we established this program to honour those that lead the industry efforts to encourage participation in outdoor activities,” said Greg Thomsen, managing director for adidas Outdoor US. “These finalists embody the best of the best; their commitment and passion is critical to the future growth of our community. We are especially honored to pay tribute to our dear friend Skip Yowell. His inspiration, humour and the simple love for what he did was contagious. His magic touched us all.”
