H&M suppliers to learn more about hazardous substances from SGS

19/01/2016
Clothing retail group H&M has reached an agreement with testing and certification body SGS to provide training workshops for outsource manufacturing partners. The aim of the workshops is to increase the levels of knowledge and understanding among H&M supply chain partners of hazardous substance control in textile production.

The workshops will examine chemical management at all the main stages in textile production, including dyeing, printing, washing and finishing.

H&M’s global environmental supply chain manager, Sheila Shek, said her company wants to enhance the competence level in chemical management in the factories it works with and said she believed this to be “a crucial step” in achieving the goal of zero discharge of hazardous chemicals.

SGS told sportstextiles it anticipates “huge interest” in the workshops from suppliers and that there will be “multiple sessions” in core sourcing countries, starting with China and spreading during the second quarter of 2016 to Bangladesh, India and Indonesia, and to Turkey and other countries later in the year. It said it can hold the workshops at SGS premises or other convenient locations. “We encourage representatives from different factories to interact with each other at the workshop so they can share their best practices and current challenges,” the testing body said.
