South Korean company develops new fabric for jacket fillers

South Korean textiles maker Toray Chemical Kora has developed a micro-scale hollow fibre that could be used instead of goose or duck feathers for fillers in winter jackets, according to local media reports.

The report from business website Pulse says the fibre is made by combining two types of polyester polymer and its spiral-shaped structure makes it possible to enclose more air and better retain heat. An unnamed company official was quoted as saying that it had managed to “maximise the advantages of natural fabrics and fix the weakness through high-level textile processing technology”.

The new fibre is soft and lightweight making it suitable for use in various products, including winter jackets, duvets and pillows. Fabrics made using the fibre would be more durable due to its structure and it is recyclable, according to the report.
