Adidas one of 50 footwear brands now using Gore-Tex Surround

Sports and outdoor shoe brands are increasing their use of Gore-Tex Surround, technology introduced by WL Gore in 2014 that extends the company’s traditional membrane-based breathability and moisture protection to the whole of a shoe rather than just the upper.

It works by means of incorporating a new construction into hiking shoes or boots. This new construction consists of five components: ventilation outlets in the side of the upper, a layer of Gore-Tex’s already established Extended Comfort membrane technology underneath the upper material, a breathable, removable insole, a new form of Gore-Tex membrane technology, called Surround, underneath the insole, and finally a Gore-Tex Surround ‘spacer’ component underneath that.

Ecco and Lowa, early adopters of Surround, are increasing its use in their latest collections and, for the first time, adidas is using the technology in some of its products. Overall, WL Gore says more than 350 Surround-enabled styles are available to sports and outdoor enthusiasts now from 52 different footwear brands.

Meindl, La Sportiva, Mammut, Salewa, Chiruca and Zamberlan were also among the early adopters. Other footwear brands to have adopted the technology subsequently, starting with  their spring-summer 2017 collections, include Haglöfs, Merrell, The North Face and Under Amour.

At the time of Surround’s launch, WL Gore said extending the use of membrane technology to the bottom of the foot is a good way to increase breathability because it makes between 25% and 30% of the surface of the foot more breathable than before.
