Adidas unveils shoe with new ‘silk-like’ upper

Munich-based industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers AMSilk has supplied its Biosteel fibre, which it describes as “replicating” natural silk, to adidas for use in the sports brand’s Futurecraft Biofabric prototype shoe.

The new shoe features an upper made from 100% Biosteel. Adidas said on announcing the product that the material offers “a unique combination of properties”. It is 15% lighter in weight than conventional synthetic fibres, the sports brand explained, but also “has the potential” to be “the strongest fully natural material available”.

Biosteel is 100% biodegradable “in a fully natural process”, it added.
