Adidas releases 3D-printed running shoe
Sportswear manufacturer adidas has made a limited number of its new 3D-printed running shoes available at stores in New York, London and Tokyo.

The 3D Runner marks the first time the brand has used 3D-printing technology to create a complete shoe.

The midsole is made from a 3D-printed web-like structure, with different areas of it having different densities depending on the level of impact it typically experiences. It also has a 3D-printed heel counter, which is integrated with the midsole to eliminate gluing or stitching, and a knitted upper.

Mikal Peveto, senior director of the Future team at adidas, said: “This is just the beginning. Creating customised shoes based on an individual’s footprint — including their running style, foot shape, performance needs and personal preferences — is a north star for the industry and Adidas is leading with cutting edge innovations.”
