Sportswear manufacturer adidas has confirmed plans to build a Speedfactory in the US at the end of 2017, two months after opening its first one in Germany. The company describes the initiative, which aims to transform customised shoe manufacturing into an automated process, as a “new era in footwear creation”.

The announcement was made at an event for adidas investors at its headquarters in the German town of Herzogenaurach, where the company gave more details about its 2020 strategic business plan.

According to adidas, the addition of a second Speedfactory will bring the annual capacity of its customised shoe production to one million pairs.

“Speedfactory will allow us to fulfil the consumer’s demand for speed, aesthetics and performance better than ever before and better than anyone else,” said Gerd Manz, adidas vice president of technology innovation.
