Nike outlines its ten principles of circular design

23/05/2019
Sportswear brand Nike has issued a workbook that offers guidelines for designing products in a circular way. It worked on this in collaboration with students and staff at Central Saint Martins in London, which is part of the University of the Arts.

Unveiling this workbook, Nike said its approach to solving problems when it comes to design has shifted over the years towards a more holistic one, with sustainability now a “hugely important” part of its design thinking.

It has listed 10 key principles related to circular design, which are materials, cyclability, waste avoidance, disassembly, green chemistry, refurbishment, versatility, durability, packaging and new models.

"We have an obligation to consider the complete design solution, inclusive of how we source it, make it, use it, return it and, ultimately, how we reimagine it," said John Hoke, Nike’s chief design officer.
