Kathmandu acquires Rip Curl for $236m
Rip Curl, one of the best known names in surfing, has been purchased for $236m by Australia- and New Zealand-based outdoor retailer Kathmandu. The acquisition creates a surfing and outdoor adventure lifestyle company, that will be, according to Kathmandu CEO Xavier Simonet, “highly complementary, seasonally balanced.”
Founded in 1969 by surfer friends Brian Singer and Doug “Claw” Warbrick, Rip Curl offers surf-related products, ranging from highly technical wetsuits, boardshorts and swimwear, to beach lifestyle apparel, equipment and accessories.
Kathmandu has been selling outdoor apparel and equipment since 1987. Last year the company acquired Oboz, a premium US based outdoor footwear brand, and today has more than 160 retail stores in Australasia, four online stores and a wholesale presence in the UK and the US.
The brands are expected to continue to run independently, while combining expertise to serve customers who enjoy the outdoor adventure and surfing lifestyle.
In a statement from Rip Curl, founders Mr Singer and Mr Warbrick said: “It’s an emotional event for us. Surfing and the surf industry has been an integral part of our lives for more than 50 years. We realise Rip Curl, our baby, has grown into an adult recognised all over the planet and we are proud that we have created one of the world’s great brands.”
