The Bangladeshi group, which produces 18 million garments per year and supplies to Diesel and G-Star Raw, has also announced a target of recycling 85% of water it uses by March 2020.
“Water is the most scarce resource we have,” Genesis director Munir Ahmed told sportstextiles.com.
The Start to Measure system enables customers to request a report on water, gas, steam, electricity and chemical consumption; it also generates a unique QR code, linked to a data chart that provides insights from individual manufacturing machines.
“It is transparent. Many other methods in the market are assumption based, but assumption doesn’t give you the correct value,” explained Mr Ahmed.
Its steps towards improving working conditions have included a new washing process that allows recyclability of 50% of treated effluent from its wastewater treatment plant, as well as an automatic dosing system for chemical usage, reportedly resulting in significant reductions to the frequency at which workers come into direct contact with chemicals.
“Every day we become more sustainable, with more technology and means of doing it,” added Mr Ahmed.
