Waterless dyeing process inspires One Million Litres initiative

24/10/2019
Denim mill Tejidos Royo, one of the pioneering partners in the waterless dyeing system DryIndigo, has launched a campaign to find a project to donate the equivalent of one million litres of water to.

It estimates the amount will be the volume saved in 2019 by converting its textile dyeing system to the foam-based process.

The Spanish mill tested the process, which has been 10 years in development, using technology from Texas Tech University and input from partners including Lee and Wrangler.

It claims as well as using no water, it uses 89% fewer chemicals and 65% less energy.

Jose Royo, a member of the board, told attendees of Kingpins denim trade show in Amsterdam that the health of the planet is everyone’s responsibility, and he hopes other brands and textile makers will adopt the technology.

He added: "In the textile industry, we need to rework our processes to become a much more sustainable industry. DryIndigo is a major milestone in this area, and we hope that it inspires to make our industry a much more responsible one towards our surroundings. We are facing the sustainable denim revolution and, with One Million Liters, we want everyone to take part in it so that, together, we can meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals before 2030."

The initiative invites users to suggest a cause to donate a million litres of water to, using the platform www.onemillionliters.com or Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, before 30 November 2019.
