The managing director of German chemicals group Rudolf has said brands are moving away from products that are seasonal and are asking how they can make clothing last longer.

The company points to products such as PFC-free coatings that can add water repellency to jeans as an example of the move towards longevity.

“R&D initiatives gravitating around the ?avour of the season are de?nitely decreasing,” said Wolfgang Anton Schumann. “What’s increasing is strategic partnerships based responsible science, whose purpose is creating win-wins in the arena of ethical fashion and in the name of a renewed love for product quality.”

One of the group’s latest products is a primer that makes denim ‘laser ready’, “either through the creation of signi?cantly enhanced aesthetics on indigo and sulphur dyes, or the achievement of energy savings”.

"This breakthrough innovation is a ?rst and required eight months of very intensive and multi-disciplinary work, with key customers in two continents,” added Alberto De Conti, head of Rudolf’s fashion division. “It was mainly about applying science through a beginner's eye and encouraging teams to learn from each other.”
