Indian researchers tout a new dye process for natural indigo

03/12/2019
The South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) has developed what it claims to be a more environmentally friendly way to dye denim using natural indigo, a “sustainable reducing agent and alkali”.

K.H. Prabhu, senior scientific professor at SITRA, told local press: “We have replaced the hydrose and alkali used in the conventional dyeing process with eco-friendly products. This can be used in existing machinery, without additional capital investment, to dye large volume of fabric.”

SITRA will apply for patents for the technology, which will be exclusively used by its industry partner for five years.
