Brands join mission to turn ghost nets to nylon
In mid-March, members of the Ghost Diving Adriatic team cleaned up 40 kilos of gill nets as well as three fishing cages from the marine area surrounding Krnica, in Croatia.
Healthy Seas said: “Many volunteers that wished to be part of the action were not able to attend, however, the group of local divers managed to complete the action safely and smoothly.”
Another truck full of old nets, collected by fishermen at Den Oever harbour in the Netherlands, was transported for recycling at Aquafil’s facility in Slovenia.
Fishermen in Greece, from the Enaleia fishing school, used active nets to fish out more than 1 ton of ghost nets that will be also transported for regeneration into Econyl yarn.
Two new brands have joined the Healthy Seas project in April, donating 1% of every purchase: H1P Das Original, a start-up launched by father-daughter team Heinz-Jürgen Passler and Jessica Lauren Passler, and Virago Active, an activewear company that launched its first swimwear collection this year.
