Healthy Seas embarks on biggest clean up

Healthy Seas, an organisation that works to clear waters of ghost fishing nets and supplies them to be recycled back into nylon 6.6, has embarked on its biggest clean up.

A team of 40, mostly volunteers including 20 divers, is in Ithaca, Greece, to clear a section of sea.

The nets are used by Italian materials maker Aquafil, among others, to create the recycled Econyl yarn, which is used by swimwear and sportswear companies.

The latest brand to join the Healthy Seas initiative is Patagonia-based Karun, which makes sunglasses using the recycled nets and ropes.

June 8 is World Oceans Day.
