Aquafil’s Econyl informs Kolon Nylon by Kolon Sport

Italian textile company Aquafil has partnered with South Korean sportswear brand Kolon Sport on a recycled nylon material, Kolon Nylon, produced after around 10 months of research and development.

Kolon Nylon has been used in 10 spring-summer 2021 Kolon Sport garments in tandem with Aquafil’s Econyl yarn, itself made from waste nylon articles including old fishing nets and textile scraps (but with the “same characteristics” as nylon made of virgin raw material, according to Aquafil).

In order to highlight the history of the Korean brand (founded in 1973) and its parent, Kolon Industries (first established in 1957 as Korea Nylon, an early adopter of nylon manufacturing in the country), the spring-summer Kolon Nylon products take inspiration from bestselling heritage sportswear styles first produced by Kolon during the 1980s.

Brand manager at Kolon Sport, Park Seong-cheol, commented that at least 50% of the brand’s products will be made using “eco-friendly” materials and methods by 2023. Kolon Nylon will be “part of this movement”, Mr Park said.
