Kolon and Uniqlo donate to Korean wildfire relief

Following the evacuation of more than 6,000 people from the South Korean city of Samcheok, alone, since March 4 due to wildfires, local media have described how domestic activewear brand Kolon Sport and Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo are among those who have donated to the country’s relief efforts.

Both Samcheok in Gangwon province and Uljin in North Gyeongsang province have now been declared special disaster zones by President Moon Jae-in, The Korea Herald reported. Fires are also present, although less severe, in other regions.

Uniqlo donated 100 million South Korean won (around $80,000) in relief funds, plus clothing, to the local Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on March 7, whereas Kolon arranged for 100 million won worth of clothing - including lightweight jumpers, long-sleeved t-shirts and socks - to be airlifted to Donghae City Hall in Gangwon, close to Samcheok, in a show of support to evacuees in the chilly, mountainous region.

According to reports, the area affected by the wildfires is thought to currently exceed 13,000 hectares.
