A hiking community led by South Korean outdoor brand BlackYak, BlackYak Alpine Club (BAC), can now boast at least 300,000 members, local media have reported.

After more than doubling the size of the platform since April 2020, following a boom in more “nature-friendly” lifestyles, BAC is currently the largest mountaineering club in its home country. It was founded in 2012.

Brand-organised activities ranging from running to mountain-climbing to mountain clean-up efforts have ensured the steady growth of the initiative, a company spokesperson said. The label’s “unique” gamification of hiking has also had an effect, they added.

Hikers are encouraged to think of their workout as a GPS-oriented “game”, for example, whereas various BAC coins (to be used in-store) can also be earned according to the height of the mountain climbed. Almost 5 million certificates have been issued to BAC hikers since the club’s founding, over half of which have been issued within the past two years.
