BlackYak makes new PET commitments

South Korean outdoor brand BlackYak has entered into agreements with local firms SK Gas and SKC, an SK Group chemicals subsidiary, in addition to a new understanding with existing partner Sansu Beverage, a bottled mineral water company.

The objective behind the multilateral collaboration between SK Gas, Sansu Beverage and BlackYak is to establish a resource circulation network in which the latter will be supplied with waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, which will then be recycled into BlackYak-branded clothing and other fashion articles, local media said.

SK Gas will be responsible for collecting PET bottles discarded at its locations throughout the country. Sansu Beverage, on the other hand, will undertake a nationwide reverse logistics process involving its own products.

Separately, the outdoor brand’s link-up with SKC will give it access to the chemical company’s “eco-friendly plastic manufacturing technologies”, which reportedly encompass both recycling and the production of biodegradable plastics.

Chairman and chief executive at BlackYak, Kang Tae-sun, commented on the need for businesses to share and further hone their specialised knowledge, in order to expand domestic resource circulation networks more “solidly and sustainably” and increase participation.

Reporters also noted the apparel company’s plans to promote the fruits of its efforts by connecting the scheme to BlackYak Alpine Club, a hiking initiative currently believed to be the largest of its kind in South Korea.
