BlackYak promotes in-store PET recycling

South Korean outdoor brand BlackYak, based in Seoul, has launched an in-store recycling campaign alongside drinks company Coca-Cola Korea, as part of the latter’s ‘Wonderful’ initiative, now in its third year.

The idea behind this joint operation is to improve consumer engagement around the separation and sorting of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles, with a view to enhancing awareness of how this process ultimately impacts recyclability.

Last year, Coca-Cola Korea set up an "experience centre" for plastics recycling inside the Starfield Hanam shopping complex, located southeast of the nation’s capital. Visitors were able to trade in either 20 empty PET bottles for a Coca-Cola-branded label remover or 50 bottles for a camping bag.

This time around, the drinks manufacturer – partnered with BlackYak since last December – aims to incite customers into the outdoor brand’s stores by teasing BlackYak-made, Coca-Cola-branded “eco-friendly” camping aprons, available by way of an exchange system when customers drop off 23 waste PET bottles at select stores during July.

Each limited-edition apron, produced using precisely 23 PET bottles, will have been made following the same processes as any other item in BlackYak’s Plustic range, the two companies said. All plastic bottles exchanged must already be squashed and unlabelled.

Owing to supply limitations, interested parties are invited to enter a BlackYak-operated raffle by July 3, after which the winners may drop off 23 used PET bottles each at a participating own-brand store.

Demand for rPET fibres in South Korea has ramped up in the wake of the country’s Green New Deal. Read more in our Features section here.
