The North Face and Hyosung establish ‘recycling ecosystem’

South Korean media have reported that fibre producer Hyosung TNC and outdoor brand The North Face have joined hands to create an environmentally friendly “recycling ecosystem” with links to Korea’s southern Jeju Island.

Both companies recently signed an agreement with government and business representatives on Jeju to promote the existing project “Return for rebirth”.

For its part in the project, The North Face will make t-shirts and jackets made from Hyosung’s “eco-friendly” rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate)-based Regen Jeju yarn, made from transparent PET bottles collected on Jeju Island.

A Hyosung representative elaborated on the brand’s choice of yarn: “Regen Jeju is superior in quality compared to generic recycled fibres, such as better dyeing properties.”

The North Face reportedly plans to make wearable goods from at least 100 tonnes of the Jeju PET bottles.
