Hyosung’s latest MoU shows sharp regen focus

20/12/2021

South Korean fibre producer Hyosung TNC recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with local companies Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Livart.

Hyundai Heavy Industries is a large shipbuilding company based in the city of Ulsan to the south-east of the Korean Peninsula, whereas Hyundai Livart is a self-described “eco-friendly” furniture business headquartered in Seoul’s Gangnam district.

The deal will join the three enterprises together in a “virtuous cycle”, local media said, wherein Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Livart will supply the producer with post-consumer waste plastic bottles (with the former set to establish an on-site sorting system at each of its domestic locations), which Hyosung will subsequently convert into its proprietary regen fibre, derived from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

This fibre will then be used to make uniforms for Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Livart’s staff, effectively forging a relatively more green-minded resource reuse business model for the two enterprises.
