Hyosung weighs anchor on ‘Mipan regen ocean’
As revealed to WSA earlier this year, South Korean fibre producer Hyosung TNC has furthered its commitment to make recycled nylon fibre from waste fishing nets collected off the Korean coast.
In this vein, Hyosung recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the country’s South Jeolla province (its most south-western region) and local Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority to establish a waste fishing net recycling system “in earnest”, local media said.
According to reports, the resulting fibre produced will be branded “Mipan regen ocean”.
Overall, the intention is to simultaneously reduce ocean pollution and raise awareness of the need to protect the local marine environment.
Hyosung also stated that it would increase its investment in depolymerisation facilities by the beginning of 2022, with the intention to better remove impurities from the discarded fishing nets collected as part of the scheme and therefore secure raw material of improved purity.
Following this, the fibre manufacturer plans to produce more than 150 tonnes of Mipan regen ocean every month.
Hyosung moved to commence its regen ocean recycled polyester initiative in the same region in spring.
