Kanghyuk onboards Hyosung airbags

Seoul-based fashion brand Kanghyuk, a semi-finalist of the 2019 LVMH Prize, has created a skiwear-inspired collection which incorporates repurposed airbags donated by South Korea’s Hyosung Advanced Materials.

The airbags, which reportedly could not be used by Hyosung owing to their dimensions not meeting the company’s specifications, can be used to make around 700 jackets, local media said.

Images of the collection, which features Hyosung branding (pictured), were released on social media in early May.

Kanghyuk, co-designed by Kanghyuk Choi and Sanglak Shon, has previously collaborated with Reebok on sports shoes made from surplus materials from earlier Kanghyuk collections. According to reports, the brand will incorporate Hyosung’s regen fibre in future designs.

In conversation with Hypebeast Korea in 2019, the two designers said that procuring airbags was relatively difficult in the country, due to a licence being required.

Kanghyuk won this year’s Samsung Fashion & Design Fund (SFDF) competition.
