Lululemon to triple Chinese stores in five years

Activewear brand Lululemon, headquartered in Vancouver, has told Chinese state-controlled outlet China Daily that it intends to more than triple its number of boutiques on the mainland over the next five years, growing its footprint from 71 stores currently to 220.

The comments were made by the Canadian company’s chief executive, Calvin McDonald.

Mr McDonald also highlighted Lululemon’s positioning as being in line with the Chinese government’s 2019-2030 Healthy China initiative, which seeks to boost the health of the local population and, in turn, fuel more social and economic growth. “We are committed to supporting the well-being of people and communities through physical, mental and social dimensions, which is very much aligned with the Healthy China priorities,” he said.

The chief executive added that the brand’s Chinese customers typically skew younger than their North American counterparts and, generally, could be considered mid- to high-income individuals.
