Beijing team achieves degradable trainers

Beijing-based outlet China Science Daily has reported that researchers from Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) have developed biobased, degradable casual trainers.

The first batch of more than 500 pairs were shared among BUCT faculty and students following a ceremony on August 16.

Led by Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Zhang Liqun, the team found that a particular type of biobased polyester rubber could be used for the soles after completing a 1,000-tonne pilot. Hemp and bamboo fibres were used for other parts of the shoe, China Science Daily said, along with latex derived from corn stalks.

Stable enough for daily wear, each article can reportedly degrade “quickly” under unspecified composting conditions. The polyester rubber could also be used in the production of biobased, degradable tires and oil-resistant seal rings, reports suggested.

Chinese research into degradable footwear has previously been limited by a lack of available biodegradable rubber material, commented research team member Professor Wang Zhao.

Next steps include working with industry to scale up production.
