PrimaLoft biodegradable fabric in autumn pieces
High-performance insulation material specialist PrimaLoft said it is partnering with more than 15 brands this autumn to launch its first biodegradable, 100% recycled synthetic insulation and performance fabric.
The performance fibres that go into PrimaLoft Bio are said to be made from 100% recycled materials that biodegrade in specific environments such as landfills, oceans and wastewater. (This includes 93.8% biodegradation in 646 days in a landfill environment and 76.6% biodegradation in 973 days in a marine/ocean environment.)
Degradation only occurs in such environments, the company said, and they will not break down during use, in the washing machine or in the closet for the full lifetime of the garment.
First styles using the insulation will be available in autumn 2020 collections from brands including 4F, ESKA, Goldwin, Herno, Horsefeathers, Icebug, Jack Wolfskin (pictured), Klättermusen, Maloja, Namuk, Norrøna, Reusch, Roeckl, Ternua, Traumina and Viking. Upcoming seasons will see the technology in products from Helly Hansen, Houdini, Montane and Rossignol.
“The prevalent use of plastic in our society has a huge impact on our environment because of its inability to break down over time,” says Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. This fabric is designed to biodegrade “in the environments where most plastics eventually end up: landfills and ocean water”.
