India adds 10% duty to imported cotton

03/02/2021
India’s finance minister has announced a 10% duty on cotton imports in a bid to boost the country’s cotton farmers.

Nirmala Sitharaman also announced a series of mega textile parks – seven in the next three years – that she said would make India’s textile sector more competitive.

However, while India is the world’s largest cotton producing country, the news has come as a blow for some manufacturers and textiles companies that rely on overseas cotton.

The Southern India Mills’ Association has requested the tax be withdrawn, stating the clothing industry has to import extra-long staple and organic cotton to meet demand from global brands.
