1984 Michael Jordan Nikes to break records
Icons of Excellence and Haute Luxury, a sale by international auction house Sotheby’s, is set to take place in Las Vegas on October 24.
Among the high-value lots offered are a pair of Nike Air Ship sneakers worn by Michael Jordan during a professional basketball game in 1984.
The shoes are attributed to Mr Jordan’s fifth NBA game on November 1 of the same year, although Sotheby’s indicated that they may have been worn in additional games before this date.
Expected to be reach somewhere between $1 million and $1.5 million, this makes the signed red-and-white footwear the most valuable sneakers ever offered at auction.
Designed by Bruce Kilgore, Air Ships were the first basketball shoes to be worn by the athlete as an NBA professional. The shoes were given to Mr Jordan in limited numbers while production of the Air Jordan 1s was finalised by Nike, giving the leather, rubber and cotton footwear creative, athletic and cultural significance.
