VF’s targets include supply chain mapping and chemicals

Outdoor group VF Corporation has published 12 new goals in its latest Made for Change sustainability and responsibility report – the first such report since 2018.

These goals include eliminating all non-essential, single-use plastics from VF direct operations and sponsored events by 2023; eliminating and/or restricting all unwanted chemicals or substances, using the CHEM-IQSM programme, from its supply chain by 2025; tracing five of its key materials through 100% of the supply chain by 2027; and eliminating all single-use plastic packaging by 2025.

The owner of The North Face, Timberland and Vans has already completed the mapping of all leather and cotton sourced by VF brands.

It highlighted progress made during the financial year 2020 (April, 2019 – March, 2020) including: 75% of all cotton purchased by VF was grown in the US, Australia or under a third-party sustainability scheme – the goal is to reach 100% by 2025; and 29% of VF’s electric power at owned-and-operated facilities was powered by renewable energy sources (with a target of 100% by 2025).

Sean Cady, vice-president of sustainability, responsibility and Trade at VF, said: “We believe there is a reciprocal relationship between purpose and profit, and when we get it right, we create a virtuous cycle that positively impacts the world and our bottom line.

“We’re proud of our work to date and know there is more work to do in this space independently and collaboratively with the global apparel industry and beyond. We’re confident we can drive continued progress while simultaneously delivering products that consumers desire.”
