Ventile becomes PFC-free with 63% plant-based DWR

Perfluorinated compounds are used in durable water repellent (DWR) finishes to make textiles waterproof, but they are under scrutiny for potentially being harmful to the environment.
Ventile has worked with scientists, textile experts and dye houses to produce a DWR replacement for PFCs without compromising the quality of its fabric.
The new finish contains 63% renewably sourced content derived from plant-based sources, selected from non-genetically modified (non-GMO) and non-food-source feedstock.
Ventile marketing manager Daniel Odermatt said: “This is a milestone moment for Ventile, one which we are incredibly proud to announce after years in the making. As part of our commitment to environmental protection and sustainable textile production, moving to a PFC-free solution was the natural next step for our business.”
Ventile fabric was first developed by scientists at the Shirley Institute in Manchester in 1943. Originally created to help save the lives of Air Force pilots flying over the Atlantic during wartime, the fabric was designed to be cool and comfortable on land, yet warm and impenetrable if it came into contact with water. Ventile supplies fabric to outdoor and fashion brands.
