Spandex and polyester ahead of the pack in China
According to reports from within the country, China produced 65.25 million tonnes of chemical fibre in 2021, a year-on-year increase of around 8.3%.

Whereas output of viscose filament and acrylic fibre declined by 2.4% and 11.9%, respectively, the amount of polyester fibre made notably rose by 10.8% on the previous year. Similarly, the country’s spandex manufacturing grew by 10% in 2021.

In terms of export volume, China shipped roughly 5.2 million tonnes of chemical fibre abroad last year, representing a 11.6% boost on figures for the year prior, as well as a return to 2019’s pre-pandemic levels. All major fibres registered export growth, apart from viscose staple fibre (down 13.2% year on year) and acrylic fibre (down 27%).

Local media also pointed to the forecasted transformative impact of the government’s 14th five-year plan (effective 2021-2025), which demands cleaner, greener and more sustainable development from China’s chemical fibre enterprises in line with its wider “dual carbon” strategy.
