Swedish regenerated textile firm Renewcell, the company behind Circulose fibre, has revealed that its Renewcell 1 textile-to-textile recycling facility in Sundsvall is expected to be fully operational within the next month.

Chief executive Patrik Lundström described the site as the first commercial-scale plant of its kind in the world. He said that “several” test runs had already been completed since August 19 using water only, with textile waste now being tested at certain sections of the process line for quality assurance purposes.

Output will increase gradually over the next three to six months, Mr Lundström added, with capacity at Renewcell 1 expected to reach 120,000 tonnes per annum two years ahead of schedule.

Renewcell also formed a strategic partnership with Swiss textile technology developer HeiQ back in June, centred around commercialising AeoniQ cellulose filament yarns from Circulose textile waste pulp. (Read more about AeoniQ in WSA here.)
