Plant-based is not enough, Covation Biomaterials says
Polymer developer Covation Biomaterials showcased a variety of new apparel applications of its Sorona and Susterra products at the Sustainable Fashion Expo in Tokyo in mid-October.
It had samples of apparel, footwear and performance gear from partners in Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan on display at the event and also presented a new Sorona fabric collection, made exclusively for the Sustainable Fashion Expo.
“Sorona is a 37% plant-based polymer that brings sustainable functionality and comfort to textiles including wovens, knits, insulation and footwear,” Covation said, “while Susterra propanediol is a road-ready, natural 100% plant-based diol ingredient used in footwear, outdoor apparel, performance gear, and more.”
At the event, global marketing director, Partick Van Waes, said it was not enough to make propanediol from plant-based feedstock. He added that the feedstock needs to be grown responsibly. Mr Van Waes explained that Covation’s commitment to this was demonstrated in its recent enrollment in a farmer-driven regenerative agricultural programme called Truterra.
“We believe this is a critical next step in empowering our customers and partners to better track their contributions towards reducing the environmental footprint within their supply chains, all the way through to the final consumer product,” he said.
