Gas subsidy withdrawal to hit Pakistan’s textile sector

Senior vice-chairman of the Pakistan Yarn Merchants Association Sohail Nisar has appealed to the government to continue subsidising gas for export-orientated sectors, warning the withdrawal could force textile manufacturers to close.

Gas suppliers have stopped the supply of subsidised gas to the textile, sports, surgical, leather and jute sectors.

Mr Nisar said the government’s discontinuation of the electricity relief tariff in March had resulted in power looms being closed and that stopping the gas concession package will cause an enormous increase in costs for the textile industry.

He said: “As gas is the basic raw material for keeping the production activities of the textile industry running, the government should create ease for industries and take measures to reduce production costs instead of creating difficulties. This will enable timely production of export goods and the delivery of orders to foreign buyers as promised.”
