Major textile recycling scheme launches in Austria

Beginning with Salesianer Miettex, responsible for gathering all waste unfit for reuse, the next link in the chain, Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA), will subsequently deliver the textiles to aid organisation Caritas Austria, where 70-plus individuals with disabilities will be employed to sort through the waste by hand. Swedish forestry cooperative Södra, the only non-Austrian network member, will then transform this material into its OnceMore cellulose pulp, which also typically contains some wood pulp. Finally, fibre manufacturer Lenzing, already a Södra partner since 2021, will use its own Refibra technology to produce lyocell and viscose.
Lenzing and Södra now aim to together process 50,000 tonnes of textile waste by 2027, the former added.
“One company alone cannot solve the pressing problem of textile waste,” commented Lenzing's textile circularity lead, Sonja Zak, while calling for "continued action across the whole sector".
