Lenzing Ecovero with Refibra debuts at Intertextile Apparel
Fibre manufacturer Lenzing launched Lenzing Ecovero with Refibra technology at China-based textile trade show Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics (Intertextile Apparel) between August 28 and 30.
The company, still headquartered in the small Austrian town to which it owes it name, specialises in the production of wood-based manmade cellulosic fibres (MMCFs). According to fair organiser Messe Frankfurt (Hong Kong), its dedicated pavilion at Intertextile Apparel extended to 43 of its downstream supplier partners, in addition to Lenzing itself.
Lenzing Ecovero with Refibra incorporates as much as 20% post-consumer textile waste as raw material for Ecovero, first announced back in 2017 as a lower impact, more transparently sourced viscose fibre. This ratio is only expected to increase with time, the MMCF developer said.
Refibra technology, which also came to market the very same year, typically pulps cotton textile waste with pre-consumer cotton scrap left over from clothing production. The resultant ingredient is then combined with sustainably sourced wood pulp to make Tencel-branded lyocell.
Vice-president of Lenzing’s global textiles business, Florian Heubrandner, described this latest solution as “well-positioned to meet the surging demand for diverse circular design innovations”, particularly among “like-minded fabric mills, garment manufacturers and consumer brands”.
