Unifi introduces Textile Takeback for polyester recycling

Fibre manufacturer Unifi, the maker of recycled polyester yarn Repreve, took the opportunity to launch its Textile Takeback programme to visitors to China-based trade fair Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics (Intertextile Apparel) in late August.

The initiative encompasses the collection of polyester fabric and yarn waste from Unifi customers, followed by “a unique material conversion process” to turn the shredded material into recycled polyester resin for producing Repreve-branded filament, staple fibre or yarn.

There may also be a need to blend fabric waste with recycled plastic bottle flakes in some instances, the company said, depending on customers’ specifications.

Brand sales and marketing director at Unifi Textiles (Suzhou), Luka Yuan, described Intertextile Apparel as the firm’s “first choice to promote in Asia”. Speaking to co-organiser Messe Frankfurt (Hong Kong) from its booth inside show’s Functional Lab zone, Ms Yuan added that Unifi had “gained many business opportunities” as a result of exhibiting over the three-day event.

Unifi reported net sales of $623.5 million for the year ended July 2, down 30.8% on fiscal 2022.
