Hatred of waste drives Unifi’s new targets

US-based yarn maker Unifi has committed to transforming the equivalent of 1.5 billion t-shirts worth of textile and yarn waste by 2030 in its new Sustainability Snapshot.

In its fourth sustainability report, the company also set a goal of 30% reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 (in its own facilities and where the energy it uses is produced) greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2030 and pledged to achieve zero non-compliant water discharges.

In 2023, it reduced landfill waste by 93% at its Central American production site and reduced landfill waste by 55% at its Brazilian site.

Unifi CEO Eddie Ingle said: “In 2023, we made significant strides in recycling volume, waste reduction, and strategy refinement.

“As a recycler and manufacturer, we must consider our own environmental impact, our customers’ impact and even the impact of our customers’ customer. We approach this role through one simple lens – we hate wasting. We hate wasting resources, thinking, time – and waste.

"This mentality gives me comfort that we can reach our newly launched 2030 sustainability targets.”
