Lenzing issues annual sustainability report

After registering year-on-year annual growth of 16.9% earlier in March, Austria-based manmade cellulosic fibre developer Lenzing has published its second online sustainability report, this time for the twelve months of 2022.

The document, audited by KPMG Austria, outlines how the company reduced its scope one, two and three carbon emissions by 18% per ton of pulp and fibre sold versus 2017 baseline figures last year, double what it achieved only a year previous.

Its target is to slash these emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2017.

Lenzing also revealed it had rolled out a new corporate strategy, Better Growth, in June 2022, designed to inform business decisions for the next five years, “with a focus on maintaining a leading role in the field of sustainable speciality fibres in an unpredictable economic environment”. This involves sharpening its focus on “sustainable and high-quality premium fibres” for textiles and nonwovens, it said, in addition to building on its successes in Brazil and Thailand and taking steps to “further advance” its journey towards circularity.

According to the group, teams across its global production facilities have all already been familiarised with its Better Growth plans through on-site presentations.

Other key highlights from 2022 include the implementation of the first-ever line manager development programme at the company's plant in Purwakarta, Indonesia; the launch of a “comprehensive” diversity and inclusion project at Brazilian joint-venture LD Celulose; joining cellulosic fibre and textile recycling initiatives like CISUTAC and ReHubs in Europe; signing up to chemical supply chain scheme Together for Sustainability; and becoming a UN Global Compact member.

The producer also noted that it had been ranked among only 12 firms to achieve a triple ‘A’ rating from UK environmental impact charity CDP out of the almost 15,000 entities assessed by the non-profit. CDP considers three categories when measuring impact and issuing its ratings: water, climate and forests.
